About Rufus
Rufus is an indispensable, open-source utility designed to format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys, memory sticks, and external drives. It is especially useful when creating USB installation media from bootable ISOs (Windows, Linux, UEFI), working on systems without an OS installed, or running low-level utilities like DOS and BIOS flashers. Rufus is remarkably faster than competing utilities—often creating Windows USB media twice as fast as alternative tools.
Key Features
- Blazing Fast Boot Creation: Quickly burn Windows 11, Windows 10, Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, and emergency diagnostic ISOs to USB.
- Full UEFI & Legacy Support: Create GPT partition schemes for modern UEFI systems or MBR partition schemes for legacy BIOS hardware.
- Windows 11 Setup Customization: Automatically bypass TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, minimum 4GB RAM checks, and online Microsoft account mandates.
- Windows To Go Creation: Easily build a portable, fully functioning Windows installation running directly from external USB storage.
- Bad Block Detection: Perform comprehensive surface scans to identify corrupted memory cells before burning installation images.
- Completely Standalone: Lightweight executable requiring zero installation overhead—run directly on any compatible Windows PC.
How to Create a Bootable USB with Rufus
- Insert a USB drive with at least 8GB of storage into your computer (ensure all important files are backed up).
- Launch Rufus with administrative privileges.
- Select your USB flash drive under the Device dropdown.
- Under Boot selection, click SELECT and locate your Windows or Linux ISO image.
- Under Partition scheme, choose GPT for UEFI-based PCs or MBR for older Legacy BIOS systems.
- Click START. Confirm desired customization options (such as Windows 11 bypasses) and proceed.
- Wait until the progress bar reaches 100% and displays READY. Your bootable USB drive is now prepared.
